Common Iodine Questions

What is the correct dosage for Iodine?
Please note, we cannot prescribe or recommend dosages. Here is an excerpt from the book Folk Medicine by Dr. Jarvis (full text at lugols.com):

"In 1829 a French physician named Lugol originated a solution which contains iodine in a solution of potassium iodide. It has been used steadily ever since it was originated.

When used to maintain the iodine content of the body the dose is small and is taken only on certain days of the week. When the mineral content of the body is analyzed, only a trace of iodine is found. Ten drops of iodine represent more iodine than is found in the entire body. For this reason, the dose of Lugol's solution of iodine is one or two drops (In this article Dr. Jarvis is speaking about Lugol's Solution 5%. When using Lugol's Solution 2% use 2-3 single drops to get the equivalent), depending on your body weight. If you weigh 150 pounds or less, for example, your dose to maintain the normal iodine content of the body is one drop, taken at one meal on Tuesday and Friday of each week. If you weigh more than 150 pounds, the dose should be two drops instead of one. It is useful to remember that the human body works on the minimum of anything it needs. If there should be a rise in sickness in the area where you live, it would be well to take the Lugol's solution three times a week instead of two, on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, for the purpose of storing up reserve.

How is the drop of the solution to be taken, on the directed days? In general, medical men prescribe iodine to be taken on an empty stomach, preferably 20 minutes before food is taken. During the passing years Vermont folk medicine has worked out a different plan and it is one I like to follow. It has been referred to in another connection elsewhere in this book. To repeat, adding one teaspoonful of apple cider vinegar to a glass of water to make the water acid in reaction, holding the medicine dropper horizontal in order to get a maximum drop, one drop of the Lugol's solution is added to the mixture. The contents are stirred with a spoon and sipped through the course of the meal, as one would drink a cup of coffee or tea."

What is the number of mg's per drop of iodine and potassium iodide in J.CROW'S® Lugol's Solution?
Calculating Number of MG's of Iodine and Iodide per Drop of J.CROW'S® Lugol's Solution: 5%: Each VERTICAL "metric" drop (= 1/20ml) is approximately 2.5 mg of iodine and 5mg of potassium iodide. The Iodide portion of Potassium Iodide is about 75% so that is 3.75mg. Therefore the total Iodine plus Iodide is 2.5 + 3.75 = 6.25mg and 2 drops is about 12.50 mg's of iodine/iodide (5.0 mg iodine, 7.50 mg iodide).

Calculating Number of MG's of Iodine and Iodide per Drop of J.CROW'S® Lugol's Solution:2%: Each VERTICAL "metric" drop (= 1/20ml) is approximately1.0 mg of iodine and 2.0 mg of potassium iodide. The Iodide portion of Potassium Iodide is about 75% so that is 1.5 mg. Therefore the total Iodine plus Iodide is 1.0 + 1.5 = 2.5 mg and 2 drops is about 5.0 mg's of iodine/iodide (2.0 mg iodine, 3.0 mg iodide).

What causes the color variations in Lugol's Solution of Iodine?
A variation in the color of Lugol's Solution of Iodine, both 2% and 5%, may be caused by storage conditions, extreme temperature in transit (hot or cold), or any number of other environmental variables. We are aware of oxidation or sublimation causing changes as well.

If you are concerned about color variation or strength we are happy to replace any bottle at any time for any reason just contact us through the website on the label for an exchange or full refund.

Does color variation in Lugol's Solution mean the contents are different?
While the % may vary, the contents are the same in all instances i.e. Lugol's Solution 2% contains 2% iodine, 4% potassium iodide, 94% distilled water. Lugol's Solution 5% contains 5% Iodine,10% potassium iodide and 85% distilled water.

If you are concerned about color variation, you may return any bottle you like for an exchange or full refund.

What is the difference between organic and inorganic iodine?
What's the Difference Between Inorganic & Organic Iodine? Radioactivity

The difference between organic and inorganic iodine is confusing to many people. Is iodine organic or inorganic? Iodine can be both types. When we hear the word "organic," we automatically think of certified organic foods, but inorganic iodine is not less clean or somehow more unhealthy for you than organic iodine. In fact, the opposite is true.

Unlike organic fruits and vegetables, organic iodine is radioactive and very harmful and dangerous to humans, capable of severally damaging your thyroid gland. Without getting too scientific, iodine-129 and iodine-131 are organic radioactive isotopes formed in fuel rods during nuclear fission. When a human is exposed to these types of radioactive organic iodine, it builds up in the thyroid and can actually kill you. Radioactivity and nuclear radiation are obviously bad for human health and life, so you definitely don't want to take an "organic iodine supplement."
Inorganic Non-Radioactive Iodine for Thyroid

Inorganic iodine, on the other hand, is the "good kind" of iodine that can actually protect you from the bad organic type. Non radioactive iodine won't build up in your thyroid gland over time. Unlike a buildup of radioactive organic iodine, your body can naturally get rid of any excess non radioactive inorganic iodine through the kidneys and urine within 24 hours.

J.CROW'S® Lugol's Solution of Iodine is made from 100% USA sourced premium ingredients. Our elemental iodine and potassium iodide is derived from 320 million year old natural brine deposits two miles beneath the surface in Western USA. This is one of the few places in the world where such deposits exist.

What is a Talisman and why do you say Talisman only?
A talisman is something for good luck. We use the phrase "Talisman Only" as a disclaimer. We make no claims in order to avoid regulatory concerns which have not otherwise tested Lugol's solution for specific conditions or uses. Lugol's has been widely recognized as a traditional and metabolic disinfectant for almost 200 years.

J.CROW'S® Lugol's Solution is made from elemental iodine and potassium iodide in distilled water. It is equivalent to USP or higher and of the highest purity and the very same type and quality a doctor may recommend when prescribing iodine (which only a doctor may do). The iodine and potassium iodide used in J.CROW'S® Lugol's Solution is derived from natural salt brine deposits 2 miles beneath the surface, in the Western United States, one of the few places in the world where such deposits exist. It is compounded and manufactured in a registered EPA manufacturing facility which produces numerous USP certified bulk products according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Current Good Manufacturing Practices.

Lugol’s is a water-soluble solution of Iodine and Potassium Iodide in continuous use since 1829. As a unique chemical mixture it has a wide range of diverse applications, many of which are non medical or supplemental; water purification, general purpose disinfectant (within a number of different industries), chemical reagent, etc. to name a few.

While the history and usefulness of iodine is well known and while Dr. Jarvis understood the benefits of its many diverse applications (as few others do today), we make no claims with respect to its efficacy for any purpose whatsoever.

Why are there no dosage instructions on the bottle?
Lugol's was invented in 1829 as a water soluble source of iodine and potassium iodide. Lugol's has been in continuous use since that time and has many diverse applications (water purification, reef management, general purpose disinfectant, etc) other than medical, for which only a doctor may make use recommendations.

Basic information about Lugol's may be found in Dr. Jarvis' two books, Folk Medicine and Arthritis and Folk Medicine, excerpts of which are posted at lugols.com.

I have heard that nascent iodine may be better than regular iodine or potassium iodide. Is this true? What exactly is nascent iodine?
Nascent Iodine is NOT the same as J.CROW'S® Lugol's Solution, the original Lugol's Solution. The term " iodine " actually describes a single atom of iodide bound to either another atom of iodide or to another compound. “Nascent iodine” was once used as simply another name for sodium iodide (an iodide atom bound to sodium). The term was then used by the American mysticist, Edgar Cayce, to describe a free form of iodine (i.e., a single atom of iodide unbound to any other atom) - apparently created by adding electromagnetic or another form of energy. However, when this free form of iodide is exposed to a positively charged ion, such as sodium or potassium, as it would be in a liquid supplement, it will bind with these to form sodium iodide or potassium iodide. Therefore, if you are buying a supplement promoted as “nascent iodine”, it is most likely sodium iodide or potassium iodide. Again, J.CROW'S® Lugol's Solution is the original Lugol's Solution containing iodine (I), potassium iodide (KI), and distilled water (H2O).

There do not appear to be any published, placebo-controlled studies on “nascent iodine” for thyroid support or any other use.

The bulb on my dropper dried out. Will you replace it for me?
Yes and please note the following: We use a natural rubber bulb with our dropper assembly; a material used for such purposes for over 100 years. Iodine is a disinfectant, highly corrosive and drying agent/halogen. If subjected to extreme temperatures, certain levels of humidity or dryness or not stored upright this corrosion and drying may occur and affect the rubber bulb. Most times it never happens. Nonetheless, J.CROW'S® guarantees customer satisfaction and guarantees every bottle sold for the life of the bottle. We will replace any dropper assembly or dropper bulb at any time at no charge. With over 50 years of manufacturing experience, we have determined that a glass pipette dispensing assembly is far superior for accurate measurement than any other method available. Orifice reducer tops are not satisfactory since there is no control for dispensing accurately. Bottles with two tops mean you have to interchange and iodine gets all over the place. Any bulb and pipette assembly dispensing a halogen are potentially subject to corrosion, drying or evaporation through membrane leakage. We are aware of all these variables and stand by our product, the dispensing system, and its efficacy, in every instance.
